ILAE Centenary Celebrations

ILAE was founded in Budapest on 30th August 1909, during the XVIth International Medical Conference. At the 2009 congress, the centenary of our society will be celebrated. Few if any societies in the field of neurology have such a long history and the centenary is indeed an extra-ordinary achievement for ILAE, and is a tribute to the great contribution of the ILAE to epilepsy. At the congress, there will be various centenary events including a centenary reception, an historical exhibit, centenary lectures, a film festival (100 years of epilepsy in film) and the launch of a centenary history book. It is hoped all attendees will join to celebrate the ILAE’s first 100 years and help launch the society into its second century.

100 YEARS OF EPILEPSY IN FILM THE CENTENARY FILM FESTIVAL AND FILM COMPETITION.

Epilepsy has stimulated many artists, writers and filmmakers. Images of epilepsy are embedded in several important themes in Western Culture. Many important film directors have used these images and themes in their films. As part of the centenary event, a film festival will be held at the 28th International Epilepsy Congress. The festival is entitled 100 years of Epilepsy in Film and important features films made between 1929 and 2007 will be shown.

The ILAE is also holding a Centenary Film Competition with prize money of US$5000. The awards will be made for the best films made since January 2000, which are inspired by or relate to epilepsy or seizures. Entries from all film genres are eligible, with the exception of educational films and clinical teaching materials. The criteria for judging will be artistic and creative merit.
